Celtics name two captains for upcoming season

Ime Udoka breaks tradition, appoints Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart as co-captains

The Celtics will have two captains this year, breaking a tradition since early in Brad Stevens tenure as head coach.

Ime Udoka, who was introduced as the Celtics' new coach in June, said after the team's training camp practice on Saturday that he expects to name two captains for the upcoming season. He also said that he has not yet decided who those two players will be, but that he is considering several candidates.

One of the leading candidates is Jayson Tatum, who has been with the Celtics since 2017 and has emerged as one of the team's best players. Tatum is a two-time All-Star and was named to the All-NBA Third Team last season. He is also one of the most popular players on the team with fans.

Another leading candidate is Marcus Smart, who has been with the Celtics since 2014. Smart is a defensive stalwart and one of the team's most vocal leaders. He was named to the All-Defensive Second Team last season and is one of the most respected players on the team by his teammates.

Whoever Udoka chooses as captains, they will be responsible for leading the Celtics both on and off the court. They will be expected to set an example for their teammates and help the team achieve its goals.

The Celtics are coming off a disappointing season in which they finished with a 36-36 record and missed the playoffs. Udoka is hoping to turn things around this season, and he believes that having two captains will help the team reach its potential.
