Joseph: A Biblical Figure
Saintly Veneration
Saint Joseph, a biblical figure, is venerated as a saint in many Christian sects. The eleventh son of Jacob and his second wife Rachel, Joseph was born in Canaan.
Biblical Narrative
According to the book of Genesis (chapters 37-50), Joseph was a precocious dreamer and his father's favorite son. His dreams foretold his future prominence, leading to jealousy from his brothers who sold him into slavery.
Joseph was eventually sold to Potiphar, a high official in Egypt. Despite false accusations and imprisonment, Joseph gained favor with Pharaoh through his ability to interpret dreams.
When a famine struck, Joseph was appointed overseer of Egypt's food supply, where he reunited with his brothers and forgave them for their past actions.
