In a surprising announcement, Larry Thompson has been named the new owner of the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). The former owner of Thompson Brothers Construction, Thompson is the first private owner of the team since it was founded in 1949.
During a press conference, Thompson said he was excited to be the new owner of the Elks and that he was committed to the team's success. He also said that he was open to the possibility of rebranding the team but that no decisions had been made yet.
The Elks have been struggling in recent years, both on and off the field. The team has not won a Grey Cup since 2005 and has not had a winning record since 2015. The team also has been dealing with financial problems, which led to the previous owner, David Braley, selling the team.
Thompson said he is confident that he can turn the Elks around and make them a contender again. He said he is committed to investing in the team and to building a winning culture.
