PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — South Africa's return to Test cricket was thwarted by the elements as they reached 45-1 on Wednesday before steady rain forced the abandonment of play on the opening day of the first Test against West Indies.
Trinidad's temperamental weather claimed the bulk of the day's action, with only 15 overs possible before lunch was taken early. South Africa openers Sarel Erwee and Dean Elgar negotiated the tricky conditions patiently, putting on 35 before Elgar was trapped lbw by Kemar Holder for 12.
Ryan Rickelton joined Erwee at the crease and the pair added 10 more runs before the rain arrived and refused to let up, forcing the players off the field. Rickelton remained unbeaten on 15, while Erwee was 32 not out.
The abandonment was a disappointing start to the series for both teams. South Africa are aiming to bounce back from a Test series defeat in England, while West Indies are looking to build on their recent success in the format.
The match is scheduled to resume on Thursday, weather permitting.
